Thursday 24th September - walk ***** – Landguard Nature Reserve to see the Waverley – sunny and still.

After spotting the steam paddle ship the Waverley mooring up at Ipswich we were keen to see it leave for its trip to London today. We learned it was setting off at 10.15 so decided after breakfast to take our flask and watch head past Felixstowe docks from the little pier at Landguard Nature Reserve. We parked at The Manor end just after ten and walked across the reserve in the most perfect weather, very still with sunshine with some cool clouds:) We made a detour to the view point café as we needed the loo and the River Orwell was pretty much like a mill pool as we walked to the little pier where we sat and waited, a windsurfing mate and his wife arrived on a walk for a chat, a nice man down from Hull holiday arrived and set-up his video camera, I spotted a shoal of small fish off the end of the pier with tern diving, then Mag got excited when she spotted a breaching fin in the middle of the river and we were all lucky enough to see the harbour porpoise, the first Mag has ever seen! The Waverley was supposed to do a sail past at Harwich at 11.15 but it was a little late first coming into view at 11.35. It went close to the two large container ships on the first two berths and it was dwarfed by them before turning for a short trip up the Stour for a sail past the crowded Half Penny pier before returning to the Orwell as it slowly made its way out to see with its decks full of people enjoying their adventure! Mag and I then continued along the Orwell the the stunning quiet Landguard beach to the van and home after being out the best part of three hours!
